South Lake Tahoe airport is located at the south end of Lake Tahoe, south-west of the town. The 7000' runway is at an elevation of over 6000' and density altitude can easily reach 9000' in the summer. Check your performance tables, offload some weight, or wait till the day cools down. See my mountain checkout page for a typical high elevation checkout. The runway is oriented North to South - runway numbers are 18-36. Wind frequently favors runway 18, which entail flying a downwind leg close to the hills. Watch for up and downdrafts. When taking off on runway 18, there's a golf course about half a mile to the SouthWest of the end of the runway where people circle to climb. A new restaurant recently opened in the terminal building. It is called Chases and serves good inexpensive Cajun food. It is open 11-9 most days. For specifics call (530) 544 9080. If you'd like to visit the city or the lake, you'll need to take a short cab ride, but it is worth it. If you are fit, you might enjoy borrowing one of the free bycicles the FBO has for lending out. South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce has a nice Web site with visitor and other info.
